Founding chair of the UKGBC technical and policy committees, a long term member of the Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network steering group elected president of CIBSE in 2011. Awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering by Herriot Watt University 2012 he moved into academia. <image:caption>Julie Futcher is a chartered architect from professional practice, and since completing her PhD has worked as an independent consultant on climate responsive urbanism and the energy exchanges that characterise densely built urban landscapes. Her work focuses on the role of built form (the dimensions of buildings and their placement in relation to each other) in regulating these exchanges and draws attention to many of the built form outcomes which currently fall outside the broader discussion on sustainable urban development, including impacts on health and wellbeing of the wider population and on green infrastructure alongside air quality. This research is multi-disciplinary in its approach bringing together the expertise of architects, engineers, planners, geographers and climatologists at both academic and practitioner levels. Julie has strong affiliations both nationally and internationally and has pulled together a team of researchers which are leading research into the development of a planning framework to assess urban climate effects to guide urban design in a climate-sensitive manner. <image:title>About - Adam Poole</image:title>
<image:caption>Adam Poole has worked for 25 years in the built environment. He trained as an Africanist and used to run an African Affairs company. Returning a country to civilian rule was one of the big projects and a coup meant a change of direction, into engineering and the discovery that engineering is the front line in terms of pandemics, climate change and resource allocation. And, to continue the metaphor, within engineering, wargaming – a word that has entered the vocabulary during the pandemic as one of the correctives to improve our ability to plan and anticipate - needs a special place Engineering, because its products are so long lived, is about designing now to serve current and future needs. How that future scenario is understood has always been the weakest part of the package. We know we do not get precision when calling the future and that can’t be changed, but we can get a better sense of the arc of the possibilities and of the unintended consequences than we seem to have. It is time to bring more of a wargaming perspective to the things the Edge thinks and writes about built environment policy</image:caption>
